A-arm production automation at Georg Fischer in Friedrichshafen

SAR, as turnkey supplier, delivered a conveying and handling system for the automation of the cast parts (A-arms of motor vehicles) production line to the Georg Fischer GmbH company in Friedrichshafen. An A-arm (or trapezoidal-link) is a component of the suspension in a modern motor vehicle.

Various part types for various vehicle manufacturers

Various part types for various manufacturers are produced on this production line which includes the following parts that are chained via a connecting conveyance system:
  • 2 X-ray systems
  • 2 Heat treatment ovens
  • 1 Crack detection system
  • 3 Machining centers
  • 1 Cleaning system
  • 3 Assembly systems

The scope of delivery of SAR

  • System controls
  • Operator terminals
  • SAR Plant control system ALS for job card administration and production control
  • ALS terminals for the visualization of the system controls
  • Large text displays
  • Connecting conveyor systems consisting of
    • Fork truck load point
    • 4 transport shuttles, 35m in length
    • various chain conveyors
    • Area portal 12x12x8m
  • Production buffer with automated racking system for 100 glow frames
  • Handling robots from Fanuc with grippers
The various work processes require different load carriers. Therefore three independant transport and handlingsystems had to be incorporated and combined along the material flow. This is also refected in the the three different PLC areas on the control side.

A very special challenge lay in the handling of various types of A-arms in the same load carrier.

The SAR plant control system ALS

The ALS consists of the following components:
  • ALS database
  • ALS webserver
  • ALS commserver
The following belongs to the main tasks of the ALS:
  • Job administration
  • Material flow control
  • Store administration
  • Part re-tacing
  • Fault and part count logging
  • System visualisation

Data flow:

The system was handed over successfully on April 2010. The client showed his appreciation of the SAR commissioning team with a model of an A-arm (see last picture on the right hand side).
